Why Ant-Man Was Originally Team Iron Man In Captain America: Civil War

Avengers: Infinity War has been out for a month and change, and is certainly one of the most ambitious and expensive movies of all time. While Marvel fans were eager to see the shared universe's heroes and villains unite against Thanos, it wasn't long ago that Captain America: Civil War was the biggest crossover movie. That film was basically a test run for The Russo Brothers' ability to juggle a ton of characters, as most of the MCU's heroes faced off against each other in an epic tarmac battle. While the lines were drawn in Civil War, it turns out that Paul Rudd's Ant-Man wasn't always going to be on Team Cap. As writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely recently revealed, Scott Lang was going to be on Iron Man's team if Sony didn't give Marvel the rights to include Spider-Man. As they told it,

McFeely: [Tony Stark] would recruit somebody else. He probably recruits Ant-Man, I think would be that idea. Well, we had a section where you could recruit somebody, right?Markus: [Tony] actually went to San Francisco. It would not have been as cool.McFeely: I believe [Scott] was watching his daughter play soccer. It wasn't very good.

While the writers of Civil War and Infinity War may have had a back up plan in mind, it looks like they were really hoping Spider-Man would be introduced in the MCU. Luckily it happened, and Tom Holland's Peter Parker became an instant fan favorite, despite having a relatively small role in the Captain America threequel.

Stephen McFeely and Chris Markus' comments about Civil War come from their recent appearance on Kevin Smith's podcast Fatman on Batman. The duo have been very involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years, writing all three Captain America movies and Thor: The Dark World before eventually working on Phase Three's Avengers movies.

The duo of writers certainly had their job cut out for them with Civil War. In addition to crafting a story for its title character, they also had to work with the other members of The Avengers, as well as introduce two new heroes. Spider-Man and Black Panther both made their debut in the threequel, ultimately taking Tony Stark's side in the titular conflict. This allowed for Paul Rudd's Ant-Man to join Team Cap, which is arguably more his style. The guy is a professional criminal; he doesn't seem like the type to enforce The Sokovia Accords.

While Ant-Man was noticeably absent from Infinity War (because of parole?) he'll make his highly anticipated return to the MCU in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The character will finally be able to be his ultra quirky self, while also teaming up with Evangeline Lilly's Wasp.

Ant-Man and the Wasp will arrive in theaters on July 6, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The House With A Clock On Its Walls Trailer: Jack Blacks Latest Looks Mysterious And Magical

While much of Jack Black's comedic work rests firmly in PG-13 territory, in recent years he's delivered more family-friendly entertainment, particularly through his appearances in 2015's Goosebumps and last year's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Later this year, he'll keep that particular train going with The House with a Clock in Its Walls. While this movie will have plenty of horror elements just like Goosebumps did, if the first trailer is any indication, it doesn't look like it will be anywhere near as funny, though it makes up for that with its mysterious and magical elements. Take a look at the first The House with a Clock in Its Walls preview to see for yourself.

Based off the 1973 book of the same name written by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls follows a young boy named Lewis Barnavelt who goes to live with his uncle Jonathan at his strange house. The excess of clocks could just come off as eccentric, but as we see in this trailer, the house also contains numerous magical oddities, including a giant, purple-tentacled monster. But most of these are relatively easy to deal with; the true danger lies in a clock hidden within the haunted house that has the potential to destroy the world, and it's up to Lewis and Jonathan to find that clock before it's too late. Along with Owen Vaccaro and Jack Black playing Lewis and Jonathan, respectively, The House with a Clock in Its Walls' main cast includes Cate Blanchett as Mrs. Zimmerman, Jonathan's witch neighbor and best friend; Kyle MacLachlan as Isaac Izard, the original owner of this weird house; and Colleen Camp as Mrs. Hanchett, Jonathan's nosy neighbor.

Judging by this trailer, The House with a Clock in Its Walls feels like an old-school movie, and not just because it's set in the mid-20th century and the preview used the classic Universal logo. There's a timeless feel to the movie, as if (visual effects aside) it could have been made a decade or two earlier and still fit well among other cinematic offerings. But The House with a Clock in Its Walls also looks like it will be especially dark, which could work towards distinguishing itself among the competition.

With most horror movies being rated R or balancing precariously in the PG-13 realm, it's rare that a movie comes out that's intended to be scary, yet still be accessible to younger moviegoers. Goosebumps was aiming to do that, but it ultimately offered more laughs than frights. The House with a Clock in Its Walls, on the other hand, looks like it will be a more serious affair, though I imagine there will be a sprinkling of levity throughout the story. That being said, if it weren't for Amblin Entertainment producing and the fact that the source material was geared towards kids, I wouldn't be surprised if the MPAA ended up assigning The House with a Clock in Its Walls a PG-13 rating.
