Did Chris Evans Just Say Goodbye To Marvel For Good?

Did Chris Evans Just Say Goodbye To Marvel For Good?

Ever since he was brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: The First Avenger, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers has been one of the franchise's anchoring characters. Whether by himself or with his superhero allies, Steve has kept humanity safe time and time again, but over the last couple years, there's been the sense that his time is drawing to a close. The latest example of that is Evans announcing that he's wrapped filming Avengers 4, and he appears to be saying goodbye to both Captain America and Marvel for good.

Had Chris Evans stuck to his initial, six movie contract (excluding cameos) with Marvel Studios, Avengers: Infinity War would have served as his final appearance in the MCU, but Evans agreed to also return for Avengers 4 because the movie was "going to wrap everything up." As for post-Phase 4, while neither Marvel or Chris Evans have provided official confirmation, there's been no indication that Steve Rogers will be around, and Evans' above tweet implies that whatever happens to Steve at the end of Avengers 4, the actor won't be around for the next stage of this continuously-expanding franchise.

You have to hand it to Chris Evans, eight years is a hell of a run. Having already left his mark on the superhero movie world as Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch, in 2005's Fantastic Four and 2007's Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Evans made an even bigger impact as Captain America, leading three of his own movies, co-starring in all the Avengers movies and even popping up briefly in Thor: The Dark World and Spider-Man: Homecoming. But eventually every actor must leave a role, and Evans has been strongly hinting that Avengers 4 will be his last outing as Captain America. Again, officially we don't know this for sure, and even if this is what's happening, there's always the chance that years down the line, an opportunity could arise where he'd be interested in reprising the role. But for now, fans should make peace with the idea that he'll soon be departing from the MCU.

When we left off with Steve Rogers in Avengers: Infinity War, he was one of the few superheroes who survived the Thanos snap, and like everyone else around him, was shocked at the genocide that had unfolded in a matter of minutes. Just like with Infinity War, Marvel is keeping extremely tight-lipped about the Avengers 4 story, and all we know for sure about Steve is that he's reverted back to his clean-shaven look, is back to wearing a traditional Captain America costume and will have a bigger role compared to how he was used in Infinity War. Beyond that, we have no idea what's in store for the super-soldier in Avengers 4, including his ultimate fate. Will he die in battle? Will he simply retire from the superhero life? Will he somehow reunite with Peggy Carter? Since it appears this will be the last time we see Evans' Cap, one thing is certain: his exit needs to be memorable.

Avengers 4 opens in theaters on May 3, 2019, and don't forget to look through our Marvel movies guide to learn what else is in development for the MCU.

Why Amandla Stenberg Passed On Black Panther

By  at November 02, 2022  , , , ,  No comments
Why Amandla Stenberg Passed On Black Panther

One of the critical aspects of Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is the film's predominately black cast. White heroes have primarily defined the superhero genre for the bulk of its existence, but Black Panther turns that idea on its head by embracing its emphasis on black African culture. That was one thing that The Hunger Games' Amandla Stenberg noticed when she was in the running for a part in the film, and because the actress is biracial, she ultimately opted to back out and make room for another actress to take the role. In a recent interview, Stenberg said:

One of the most challenging things for me to do was to walk away from Black Panther. I got really, really close and they were like, 'do you want to continue fighting for this?' And I was like, this isn't right. These are all dark skin actors playing Africans and I feel like it would have just been off to see me as a bi-racial American with a Nigerian accent just pretending that I'm the same colour as everyone else in the movie.

It sounds like there was a genuine chance of seeing Amandla Stenberg in Black Panther at one point. However, because she's a biracial actress, she said she felt like it was the wrong move for her to make. One of the core elements of the movie's story is that it uses a large cast of black actors to portray native Africans, and Stenberg seems to think that her presence among that ensemble would've taken away from that appeal.

It's also worth mentioning that Amandla Stenberg's decision to walk away from Black Panther ultimately yielded one of the film's best performances. Stenberg was in the running to portray Shuri, but Letitia Wright's spunky performance as the titular hero's younger sister has become one of the most talked-about aspects of the entire film.

Although she ultimately decided to walk away from a film that would go on to become one of the biggest hits in recent memory, Amandla Stenberg doesn't seem to have any regrets about the decision. Elsewhere in her interview with CBC Arts, the Everything, Everything star made sure to note that she understands the fact that there are simply certain avenues of the entertainment industry that she's not meant to inhabit.

That was really challenging, to make that decision, but I have no regrets. I recognize 100% that there are spaces that I should not take up and when I do take up a space it's because I've thought really, really critically about it and I've consulted people I really trust and it feels right.

With all of that said, it's still certainly possible to assume that Amandla Stenberg could show up in a future Black Panther movie. Money talks, after all, and the fact that Disney and Marvel Studios may want to continue investing in the Wakanda corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future means there should be room for more characters to enter into the equation. If Black Panther 2 does happen, then it could provide the studio with a means to properly introduce Amandla Stenberg as her own unique personality.

Only time will tell if we will ever get a chance to see Amandla Stenberg in the MCU. Until that day comes, make sure to check out Black Panther, and watch out for the hero's next silver screen appearance when Avengers: Infinity War debuts in theaters for its new release date on April 27!

No, Venom Isnt Getting An Unrated Cut

No, Venom Isnt Getting An Unrated Cut

In a time when more and more comic book characters are scoring R-ratings for their film adaptations, Sony's Venom spin-off seemed like an obvious addition when it was first developing, since the symbiote does love his blood and gore. So when the film ended up being PG-13, many fans were understandably shocked. Still, some have been holding out hope for an additional cut on home video that would embrace more adult elements, but now director Ruben Fleischer is here to dump a bucket of cold water on that idea:

I'm proud of the movie we've put out, and I think that the additional material on the DVD adds a little bit of color to the film. I don't feel the need at this point to release an unrated version; I feel like fans seem to really like the movie that we put out.

Considering how well Venom did commercially, Ruben Fleischer basically struck gold and would hate to mess with the product so many people went out to see - as he explained in an interview with LRM. The blockbuster recently broke $850 million worldwide, and will enjoy another month in Chinese theaters due to its record-breaking success. The film was quite polarizing, as the it was thrashed by a majority of critics, but has been embraced by mass audiences.

While an R-rated Venom could please some fans, Ruben Fleischer is right, in that his movie was so well received it just doesn't need to happen. If the film had bombed and the director felt he needed to show off his grittier, gorier version to redeem the franchise it might have made sense, but that is not the case that is presented here. Not to mention, an unrated Venom would probably be a lot of work on the part of the filmmaker and the various visual effects houses, given that they would need to do additional work adding in more CGI blood, for example (assuming that the "extra" footage doesn't already somehow exist).

The reason it was decided that Venom would be PG-13 was to leave room for Spider-Man to potentially share the screen with the character in the future. Writer Jeff Pinkner recently teased this distinct possibility for the sequel. However, it's unknown if that would be Tom Holland's version (which belongs to Disney's MCU making it unlikely), or a Sony Spider-Verse Spidey (maybe a live-action Miles Morales?)

Venom is the first installment in a planned Spider-Verse franchise for Sony, and following the immense success of the film everything's going according to plan. The studio might have felt that establishing Venom as an R-rated character wouldn't have worked as well with the character in that critical position, and it does make sense to start a franchise with a wider audience in mind.

But who knows what the future will hold. After Sony's Spider-Verse has found itself a few successes with their Marvel properties they might branch out to more mature comic book adaptations. For now, you can catch Venom on Digital and Blu-ray.
