First Look At Sonic The Hedgehog In His New Movie

Sonic The Hedgehog is "a whole new speed of hero," as promised -- and shown -- in the first teaser poster. Since we're talking about Sonic, the filmmakers wisely chose to give us a motion poster, in addition to a traditional poster, to better illustrate his moves:

The live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie opens in November 2019, and just showed some brief footage at CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil. According to Collider, the footage just showed Sonic on a highway and then quickly running off screen.

Speaking of Sonic's speed, the motion poster doesn't completely tell the story of how that will be depicted in the movie. As producer Neal H. Moritz explained to IGN:

Obviously the poster can only show so much. ... That's a hint at what we're hoping to accomplish, but I think people are going to see things they've probably never seen before in trying to represent speed in this movie. We've worked so closely with the people at SEGA who are kind of the gatekeepers of Sonic to make sure we're lockstep. We're trying to make something that's for today that fans of different versions will love as well.

In the film, Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) finds himself in our modern world, where he befriends James Marsden's Tom Wachowski, who helps him try to stop Jim Carrey's evil Dr. Robotnik.

Sonic The Hedgehog is being directed by Jeff Fowler, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Gopher Broke in 2004. The filmmakers put a lot of thought into things like Sonic's fur and his shoes for the new movie. Deadpool director Tim Miller is an executive producer on the film, and he told IGN the filmmakers struggled with how to depict Sonic's eyes.

The new teaser poster doesn't reveal the final eye design:

But apparently the final eye choice didn't please the video game makers. Here's more from Tim Miller on that:

I don't think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, 'It's going to look weird if we don't do this.' But everything is a discussion, and that's kind of the goal, which is to only change what's necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He's not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don't think that's the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.

Hmm. Now I'm really curious about the eyes. In other tidbits, Tim Miller said part of the film will not take place on Earth; Neal H. Moritz added that Sonic fans can expect some Easter eggs, but they don't want to reveal too much ahead of time.

Sonic The Hedgehog also stars Natasha Rothwell, Tika Sumpter, Neal McDonough, and Adam Pally. It is currently scheduled for release in theaters on November 8, 2019. Here's what else is still playing in theaters in the few weeks left to 2018. And here's the long lineup ahead, so far, for 2019.

Karl Urban Thinks The Star Trek 4 Salary Negotiations Will Work Out

There has been a lot talk about Star Trek 4 over the last few months, and recently we learned the highly-anticipated flick might not happen after all, as some of the cast members have not signed on for the upcoming movie. Namely, reports have indicated that there are some snags going on right now as both Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are unhappy with the studios' attempts to renegotiate their contracts. According to other Star Trek franchise actor Karl Urban though, the rumors may not be as dire as they formerly seemed. In fact, Urban went so far as to tell fans at Trekonderoga that he's "confident" things will work out. Per the actor:

At the moment. I believe the status of the project is really hinging on the availability and the contract negotiations of the two Chrises... Hopefully, we get back for another movie, or two of them. We are just sort of waiting on negotiations. I'm confident we will.

There's been a lot of back-and-forth talk when it comes to the status of Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth. Initially it seemed that the situation was a bit dire, as reports indicated both Chris actors had "exited talks" with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media, although other major cast members involved with the movies had worked on closing deals to return. Now, Urban seems to be indicating that the negotiations may not be great right now, but he says he is confident everyone will be able to get on the same page at some point to make more movies.

Speaking during a panel Q&A (via Trek Movie), Karl Urban was pretty open regarding the fact that he wants to come back for Star Trek 4 and that the general gist among the cast is similar. He also said at Trekonderoga that there is a script and the movie is expected to shoot in the U.K., where director S.J. Clarkson, who was announced back in April, is based.

Star Trek 4 will already be missing one important cast member if and when it does come together. Anton Yelchin played Pavel Chekov in the first three movies. However, the actor passed away in 2016 during a horrible accident involving a recalled automobile part. In the time following, series producer J.J. Abrams said the role of Chekov will not be recast if and when a fourth Star Trek movie is made.

As it stands, if Chris Hemsworth ultimately opts not to return for Star Trek 4, we're assuming the movie could be rewritten to not include the actor, who plays James T. Kirk's father in the series. (The initial script was expected to alter timelines in some way to bring in the popular Marvel actor once more.) However, losing Chris Pine as James T. Kirk would present plenty of challenges for the franchise, and we'll have to wait and see whether or not the studio would be willing and able to go that route without polarizing the fanbase for the movies.

Regardless of Karl Urban seemingly feeling unworried about the future, other members of the Star Trek franchise, including John Cho, have mentioned they are less in-the-know about what is going on with Star Trek 4. So, we'll just have to wait and see how this particular issue pans out.

Most actors come aboard a film in one of two ways: either they audition, or they are specifically chosen for the part. This was not the case for Steve Carell in the making of Welcome To Marwen, however. Rather than going out for the part or reading a script, Carell's path to the film was motivated by the fact that he was inspired by the source material, and through that inspiration just happened to discover Robert Zemeckis was already making the movie. The actor recently told me,

This one in particular, it wasn't offered to me. It wasn't a script. I think this is the first time this has ever happened. I saw the documentary Marwencol and I loved it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it, and I wanted to pursue it in some way, and see if it could be expanded into a feature. I found out that Robert Zemeckis had the rights, and we got together, and he told me what his vision of it was, and that's how I got involved.

I sat down with Steve Carell earlier this month during Welcome To Marwen Los Angeles press day, and learned about his serendipitous path to the project at the start of the interview. Acknowledging that he has three movies out this fall (Marwen, Beautiful Boy, and Vice), I asked about his project selection and he explained that the way he teamed up with Robert Zemeckis wasn't the typical Hollywood way.

Funny enough, Steve Carell's reaction to the Marwencol documentary was very similar to his director's. I first spoke with Robert Zemeckis about the project -- then called The Women Of Marwen -- during the press tour for his last film, Allied, and he explained how he had seen the film while channel surfing and found himself filled with immediate desire to adapt the story as a narrative feature.

In particular, Steve Carell was struck by the story of Mark Hogancamp, a man who survived a brutal beating and suffered debilitating memory loss, but rediscovered artistic expression via the creation and photography of a sixth-scale World War II-era Belgian village. Carell felt a special need to expose the world to Hogancamp's story, and felt the best way to do that was through Welcome To Marwen. He explained,

The character of Mark Hogancamp was somebody that I was fascinated by and I thought, you know, here's a story that definitely needed to be told. And I was hoping that maybe a feature could bring his story to even a larger audience, and be impactful that way.

After learning about Steve Carell's particular path to the film, I had the chance to follow up with Robert Zemeckis -- though the writer/director actually downplayed the influence of the fact that Carell came to him with his own interest in making the movie. Instead what he was far more interested in was the actor's incredible talent and ability to connect with an audience.

Well, that helped for sure. But my passion for Steve was because he's such a fantastic dramatic actor, and he's obviously a great comedic actor, and he has this great empathy, this ability to portray empathy on the screen. He has this wonderful every man quality, and he fit the bill. It was just another great plus that he was attracted to the material.
