Watch The Mary Poppins Returns Trailer Redone With Yondu
This past Sunday was the Academy Awards, which is perhaps the biggest movie event of each year. While cinephiles and moviegoers alike tuned in to see which projects took home statues, there was also another show to watch: the commercials. Like the Super Bowl, Oscar commercials are top notch, and plenty of TV and film projects debuted new trailers during the show. House of Cards showed the first glimpse at the Spacey-less final season, and we also got our first look at Disney's Mary Poppins Returns. The latter's trailer was magical and dramatic, although Marvel fans have already made their own version. But instead of Emily Blunt as the title character, there's footage of Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Check it out below.
Well, my day is made. Now we just have to get Michael Rooker's signature Marvel character a role in the highly anticipated Disney sequel. But since both properties are owned by the House of Mouse, nothing is out of the question.
Since Mary Poppins Returns was announced, complete with Emily Blunt and Hamilton writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, generations of fans have been hoping for some information regarding Mary's return to Cherry Tree Lane. But with the film coming out around Christmas of this year, the time has come to give fans information, stills, and footage. The first trailer for the sequel did just that, and sent chills down many a Disney fans' spine.
The anticipation around Mary Poppins Returns only grew stronger (and more bizarre) after the release of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The blockbuster really expanded the role of Yondu, and essentially retconned him into a good character, after he was an antagonist of the first film. The most viral scene from the entire movie featured Yondu floating down upon the Guardians, and exclaiming "I'm Mary Poppins, ya'll!" This one line of dialogue has spawned endless memes, and now this hilarious spoof of the Mary Poppins Returns trailer.
With Guardians 2, Yondu has quickly become one of the most beloved characters in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. While most characters are fairly simple, Yondu was a complex one whose layers were slowly peeled back throughout the course of the sequel. It turned out that he wasn't really a villain or abuser to Chris Pratt's Star-Lord, instead trying to protect him from Ego's evil plans. Yondu's eventual death was one of the shared universe's most emotional moments, once again proving why Guardians is such a fantastic addition to the MCU.
Mary Poppins Returns will focus on the Banks family decades after the events of the first film. Practically perfect Mary will once again descend from the clouds, this time to assist the adult version of Jane and Michael, as well as Michael's three children. It'll all be set after they face a personal loss, no doubt the death of either George or Ellen Banks. The film's cast is rounded out by Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, and even the great Dick Van Dyke.
